Emergency Electrician Call-Out Charges and Cost Expectations

GSP Electricians LTD | Emergency Electrician Call-Out Charges and Cost Expectations

Electrical problems don’t always happen at convenient times. A power failure, dangerous fault or damaged electrical installation can require an electrician outside normal working hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Emergency electrician call-outs are normally priced differently from routine electrical work because they involve short-notice availability, travel and urgent attendance. At GSP Electricians, the call-out charge depends on the time of attendance, travel requirements and the nature of the electrical fault.

Local Emergency Call-Out Charges

For properties within the local service area, the emergency call-out charge depends primarily on the time of attendance.

A local call-out is defined as a property within 5 miles of GSP Electricians. Properties further away may incur additional travel charges depending on the distance and journey time.

The current local charges are:

  • Within 5 miles, 8:00am–5:00pm: £145–£175
  • Within 5 miles, early morning, late evening, night or weekend: £350–£400

All prices exclude VAT and materials.

Attendance time Call-out charge
8:00am–5:00pm £145–£175
Early morning, late evening, night or weekend £350–£400

Bank holidays and Christmas Day may be charged at higher rates. In some circumstances, prices may double because of limited availability and increased demand.

What Does the Emergency Call-Out Charge Include?

The emergency call-out charge covers the electrician’s attendance and an initial period of fault investigation.

This is normally calculated at approximately one to one and a half hours, although the exact circumstances of the visit can affect the total charge.

Travel time and distance may also be considered when calculating the cost, particularly where the property is outside the 5-mile local area.

Is the Electrical Fault Guaranteed to Be Fixed?

An emergency call-out does not necessarily mean that every electrical fault will be completely repaired during the first visit.

Some faults may require:

  • Replacement parts or materials
  • Further investigation
  • Specialist testing equipment
  • Access to another part of the property
  • More substantial repair work
  • A follow-up appointment

Where a permanent repair cannot be completed immediately, a temporary socket or temporary electrical arrangement may sometimes be considered, provided it is safe and suitable for the circumstances.

Emergency Repairs vs Routine Electrical Work

Emergency electrical work should not be directly compared with a standard routine booking.

A routine electrical job can normally be scheduled in advance, while an emergency call-out requires an electrician to attend at short notice. If substantial repair work is required during an emergency visit, the cost may therefore be higher than the equivalent work carried out as part of a planned appointment.

Once an emergency booking has been confirmed, reducing the agreed call-out charge would not normally be an option.

When Does the Emergency Call-Out Charge Apply?

The emergency call-out charge applies once the emergency service has been ordered and the customer has received the relevant booking details and estimated timescale.

Depending on the time and circumstances, payment may be required before the electrician attends. For example, an emergency call-out on a bank holiday may require payment in advance.

Customers should therefore make sure they understand the applicable call-out charge before confirming the booking.

What Is Not Included in the Call-Out Charge?

The emergency call-out charge does not automatically include every cost associated with repairing an electrical fault.

Additional charges may apply for:

  • VAT
  • Replacement parts
  • Electrical materials
  • Additional repair time
  • Specialist equipment
  • Follow-up visits where required

The electrician will explain the likely requirements as clearly as possible before attending. However, the final cost can depend on what is discovered when the electrical system is inspected.

How Much Does an Emergency Electrician Cost?

For a property within 5 miles of GSP Electricians, the current call-out charge is £145–£175 between 8:00am and 5:00pm, excluding VAT and materials.

For early morning, late evening, night and weekend attendance, the local emergency call-out charge is £350–£400, also excluding VAT and materials.

Properties outside the 5-mile local area may have additional travel charges, while bank holidays and Christmas Day may be charged at higher rates.

The total cost of an emergency electrical repair will ultimately depend on the fault, the work required, materials and how long the repair takes.
